IS Tech Expo Showcases Artificial Intelligence, Innovation, and Networking Opportunities in the Industry

Fostering Innovation at the 3rd Annual IS Tech Expo

On October 17, 2023, the Medical Properties Trust Commons buzzed with energy as more than 200 individuals gathered for the 3rd Annual IS Tech Expo at the UAB Collat School of Business. This dynamic event served as a vital platform for the exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) applications within Birmingham’s business landscape. More than just a networking opportunity, the expo raised a remarkable $11,000 for student scholarships, solidifying its commitment to nurturing the next generation of technology leaders.

Connecting Students and Professionals

The expo was organized by the Collat School’s Information Systems Advisory Council, as well as the Department of Management, Information Systems & Quantitative Methods and the Graduate School of Management. With nearly 150 students in attendance mingling with around 50 seasoned professionals, the atmosphere was electric with potential collaborations and the exchange of innovative ideas. Dr. Sam Thompson, a well-respected IS professor and one of the key organizers of the event, highlighted its inspirational nature: “Students were able to meet with local tech leaders and glean helpful insights from them, all with the goal of propelling UAB and Birmingham forward.”

Engaging Panel Discussions

A major highlight of the event was an engaging panel discussion that delved into how local tech companies are adopting AI technologies to address both their advantages and challenges. Esteemed panelists included Jason Johnson, Chief Information Officer of Southern Research Institute; Kim Sorrell, Director of Information Management at Southern Company; and Yogesh Harsh, Senior Vice President and Enterprise Architecture Group Manager at Regions Bank. Their insights provided attendees with a roadmap of the current AI landscape and its future implications.

In a thoughtful touch, the expo also catered to UAB’s online students, who were able to watch the panel live and participate by submitting questions, thereby ensuring an inclusive atmosphere that extended beyond physical attendance.

Celebrating Sponsorship and Community Support

The collaboration between the business community and the university was further reinforced by the participation of various sponsors. Following the panel discussion, a special reception offered sponsors a chance to network with attendees and exchange ideas in a more informal setting. Dr. Sam Goh, another key organizer, expressed gratitude towards the sponsors for their support: “We want to thank the companies that stepped up to sponsor the event and contribute their experiences to the panel session. It was a pleasure to see our students networking with these companies and learning more about how AI will impact them when they enter the workforce.”

Recognizing Corporate Partnerships

The success of the IS Tech Expo can be attributed in part to the generous sponsorship structure. The event boasted Gold Sponsors such as tech giants like Google and Southern Company, alongside innovative local businesses like Hibbett City Gear, Obsidian Security, and others. This diverse array of sponsors not only demonstrated their commitment to education but also showcased their vested interest in the future workforce of the technology sector.

In addition, Silver Sponsors, including well-respected names like American Cast Iron Pipe Company, BlueCross/BlueShield of Alabama, Regions Bank, and Dynics, added to the depth and richness of the event. Many of these companies were involved with the inaugural expo, highlighting the enduring relationships and dedication to community engagement.

The Dynamic Future of AI in Birmingham

The discussions around AI at the expo emphasized its growing relevance across industries in Birmingham. Both students and professionals left the event inspired, equipped with new knowledge and connections that could shape their futures. As Birmingham’s tech community continues to evolve, events like the IS Tech Expo play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry application, setting the stage for innovative advancements and collaborations in years to come.
